Overview

Introduction of School of Astronautics

In 1956, coinciding with the establishment of China's aerospace industry, the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics (renamed Beihang University in 1988) took the lead in China by establishing the Teaching and Research Section for Rocket Design and Rocket Propulsion, with Tu Shou'e and Cao Chuanjun serving as its directors. In 1958, the Rocket Department was formally established, offering majors such as launch vehicle design, liquid rocket engine design, solid rocket engine design, flight mechanics, automatic control, and remote sensing and telemetry. In 1970, due to changes in the higher-level administrative authorities, the university adjusted its internal structure according to academic disciplines, reassigning the majors of the original Rocket Department to relevant departments for management. It continued to cultivate talent and conduct scientific research in the field of aerospace technology. In 1988, to meet the needs of China's aerospace industry and scientific and technological development, the university decided to establish the School of Astronautics on the foundation of the original Rocket Department.

The School of Astronautics currently consists of three teaching and research institutions: the Department of Spacecraft Technology, the Department of Aerospace Intelligence Science and Technology, and the Department of Astronautics Propulsion. It boasts two "Double First-Class" disciplines: Aerospace Science and Technology (ranked first nationally and top globally in the Soft Subject Global Ranking) and Control Science and Engineering. The school offers master's and doctoral degrees in two first-level academic disciplines: Aerospace Science and Technology and Control Science and Engineering, as well as professional master's and doctoral degrees in three categories: Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Power, and Electronic Information. These disciplines and majors are all core to the aerospace field and serve as critical pillars for the development of aerospace science and technology.

Majors

Aircraft & Spacecraft Design, the specific major of Department of Spacecraft & Launch Vehicle Technology, is subject to the world-class discipline in Beihang University, Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology, which is among China’s “Double First-rate” disciplines. In the recent national evaluation of disciplines in Chinese Universities, Beihang University achieved the first rank in the discipline of Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology, and among the four majors in this discipline, the major,Aircraft& Spacecraft Design, is also top-ranking.

The disciplinary development of the Department of Aerospace Intelligence Science and Technology is built on the dual foundations of the national key disciplines "Control Science and Engineering" and "Aerospace Science and Technology." Through deep integration of the strengths of the second-level disciplines "Navigation, Guidance, and Control" and "Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems," the department focuses on the disciplinary direction of "Intelligent Control and Information Processing for Wide-Domain Flight," constructing a new interdisciplinary system oriented toward the future of intelligent aerospace.

Department of Aerospace Propulsion belongs to the first level subject of Aerospace Science and technology, which was nation's earliest academic doctorate conferred in this first level subject. In the recently national evaluation in January 2007, the first level subject was identified as national key subject, and has been ranked first in China.The second level subject which Department of Aerospace Propulsion belonging to is Aerospace Propulsion Theories and Engineering. It has been identified as national key second level subject in 1988, also has been ranked place in the previous disciplines appraisal which was organized by the Ministry of National Education.As one of the first universities to enter the 2011 program, our department has hosted the construction of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Aerospace Science and Technology "Energy and Power Platform" of China and successfully completed the construction of the platform.The department which has doctorate or master's degree granting was conferred to construct the shortage second level subject "Electric propulsion technology" in 2007.
