
Material is one of the three pillars of industries of 21st century and plays crucial role in modern scientific research and economic construction, therefore occupies an important position. The objective of this school is to cultivate skillful talent in the area of materials science and engineering and offer one bachelor’s degree in material science and engineering, and six different degrees in relevant subjects for each Master and Doctoral level. The school also sets one mobile post-doctoral station. The school gets admission to more than 120 undergraduates, 160 graduate students for master degree, 30 doctoral and 10 postdoctoral candidates every year. The school has also got admission to more then 20 foreign students recently.
The school of Materials Science and Engineering consists of four departments: department of materials science, department of materials physics and chemistry, department of materials processing engineering and automation, as well as department of polymer and composite. The school has best teaching faculty including experienced academician of Chinese academy of engineering, as well known expert in materials failure analysis Prof. Qunpeng Zhong. The faculty also includes the renowned “Changjiang scholars”, and distinguished young scholars for national science fund by NNSFC, such as Prof. Huibing Xu , Prof. Tao Zhang and Prof. Huaming Wang. There are 35 professors (34 doctoral supervisors), and 38 associate professors. More then 90% of teaching faculty have doctoral degree, and half of them have the foreign education experience.
The school has been undertaking a variety of projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of china and National “973” and “863” projects. In the recent five years, more than 20 scientific and technological prizes of provincial and ministerial level have been achieved, which includes one first-class and two second-class National Invention Prizes. The school possesses four provincial and ministerial key laboratories, Beijing undergraduate teaching and experiment demonstration center, and two State Education ministry innovation teams.
Materials science and engineering.
The courses for different levels of graduates are offered in two different steps .In first step, some applied and basic subjective courses are offered as public courses and some advanced level courses are offered in next step. In advance level of subjective courses, the students are divided to five research groups, including metal and ceramic materials, special functional materials and devices, the polymer and composites, materials processing engineering and automation, and corrosion and surface engineering. The school provides excellent teaching environment and advanced facilities to train students for becoming future leaders in the field of materials research and applications The school is committed for cultivation from undergraduate to post-doctor.
The school of material science and engineering is committed for best teaching standards of educations, that is why more then 85% undergraduate courses are taught by Professors. It is also focused to provide students a better study environment. This is the reason that the number of graduates in this school taking further education at home or abroad, is high among the schools of Beihang University. The rate reaches 67% in 2008, and the employment rate of graduate students is 100%.
