Introduction of School of Reliability and Systems Engineering Department

The School of Reliability and Systems Engineering is one of the principal units supporting Beihang University’s first-level discipline of Safety Science and Engineering. It offers doctoral programs in Safety Science and Engineering and Control Science and Engineering, as well as professional master’s and doctoral degree programs in Electronic Information and Mechanical Engineering.

The School offers two undergraduate majors Aircraft Quality and Reliability and Safety Engineering. Among them, Aircraft Quality and Reliability has been recognized as a national first-class undergraduate major, while Safety Engineering is a Beijing first-class undergraduate major.

The School has established the “Four Strengths” educational model — strong ideals, strong foundations, strong practice, and strong integration and strives to create a learning environment that is trustworthy, engaging, respectable, and reliable. It houses a National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Demonstration Teaching Center, and has built over 20 off-campus training bases covering key areas of national science and technology as well as the national economy. The School also initiated the Quality and Reliability Education Alliance, which now includes participation from more than 60 universities and enterprises. Upholding the philosophy of “pioneering and innovation, courage to lead, demand-driven, discipline-oriented, coordinated development of science and education, and team-based advancement,” the School has embarked on a distinctive path of innovation characterized by engineering service orientation, scientific research development, and talent training system creation. It has formed a comprehensive reliability ecosystem encompassing education, research, engineering applications, and social services, establishing itself as a leading institution in reliability science and engineering in China.

The major of Aircraft Quality and Reliability Engineering is based on the research and development of large-scale aerospace products. It aims to cultivate high-level, composite talents who can apply the theories and methods of systems engineering and master the quality, reliability, maintainability, testability, supportability, and safety of products. This major has been listed as a characteristic major in higher education in Beijing and has been selected into the Ministry of Education’s Excellent Engineers Program. It is designed to meet the design and research needs of products represented by aerospace vehicles, and to cultivate talents who love the scientific cause, have an international vision, excellent scientific spirit and engineering quality, are good at systematic thinking and knowledge integration, and can use the basic knowledge and professional skills of quality and reliability engineering to innovatively solve complex engineering problems. These talents should have high comprehensive qualities and strong practical ability.

The major of “Safety Engineering” is aimed at the characteristics of complex systems, infrastructure, and large structural products. Based on the idea of system safety engineering, it focuses on ensuring the safety of production itself and reducing the risk of accidents. It aims to cultivate high-level, composite talents who master the theory of safety characteristics formation in the research and development process of production and the engineering technology methods of safety in the usage process, and who meet the needs of safety technology and management in the research and operation of complex production systems. Graduates of this major can directly pursue master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Safety Science and Engineering in the college. They can also work in scientific research and production units in professional fields such as aerospace, transportation, communication electronics, and network information, and engage in design, manufacturing, management, and research related to quality and reliability engineering.
