Introduction of School of Transportation Science and Engineering

Beihang University is one of the earliest institutions in China to carry out talent cultivation and scientific research in transportation science and engineering. School of Transportation Science and Engineering comprises four departments: Department of Transportation Engineering, Department of Automotive Engineering, Department of Aircraft Airworthiness Engineering, and Department of Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure. Specifically, the discipline of Transportation Engineering includes Transportation Planning and Management, Transportation Information and Control, Transportation Safety and Environment, Vehicle Operation Engineering, and Transportation Infrastructure Engineering, which is a national “Double First-Class” discipline according to China Discipline Ranking, a pilot unit for developing China’s transportation strength, and Class A ranking in the fifth round of national discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, the discipline of Vehicle Engineering is a national key discipline, Vehicle Operation Engineering is a Beijing municipal key discipline, Airworthiness Technology and Management is a characteristic discipline, and New Energy Vehicle Engineering is a key interdisciplinary discipline of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Transportation School adheres to a dual-driven approach of national major needs and international academic frontiers, with the focus on intelligence, networking, and collaboration, insisting on the development characteristics of air-ground integration and intelligent transportation. So far, Transportation School has a number of national and provincial-level platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Integrated Vehicle-Road Intelligent Transportation, the National Engineering Laboratory of Comprehensive Transportation Big Data Application Technology, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Intelligent Transportation Technology and Systems, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Key Laboratory of Special Vehicle Unmanned Transportation Technology, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Vehicle-Road Coordination and Safety Control, and the Intelligent Transportation 111 Innovation Introduction Base. Meanwhile, Transportation School has won nine national science and technology awards since 2013.

The disciplines of “Transportation Engineering” and “Road and Transportation” at Beihang University (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) have been selected as national “Double First-Class” construction disciplines. The program focuses on high-performance transportation infrastructure as its primary research direction, featuring high-performance materials and intelligent integrated monitoring. In alignment with China’s national plan for building a strong transportation nation, it addresses the major demand for high-performance smart airports. The discipline concentrates on cutting-edge areas such as multi-scale collaborative theory of high-performance airport structures, performance evolution of integrated and resilient airport transportation hub facilities, and data/model-driven fusion sensing and monitoring of airport service conditions. Research topics include fundamental theories and technologies of intelligent geotechnical engineering for airports, smart functional pavement materials, structural systems of large terminal buildings in hub airports, and intelligent operation and maintenance of transportation infrastructure.

The program boasts a strong faculty team, with all full-time teachers holding doctoral degrees. In recent years, it has achieved multiple national and provincial-level awards in teaching innovation and scientific research. The training model emphasizes modernized teaching methods and practical applications, focusing on cultivating students’ engineering design capabilities and innovative thinking. Each student is assigned a personal academic advisor who provides individualized guidance throughout the four years of study on course selection, capstone design, postgraduate study, and career development. Graduates are well-prepared for research, development, and management positions in the transportation industry, enjoying broad career prospects. Outstanding students may be recommended for direct admission to master’s or doctoral programs without entrance examinations, or they may choose to pursue further study abroad, leading to diverse career and academic pathways in the future.
