
Beihang University leverages its world-class engineering strength to power cross-disciplinary innovation at the medicine–engineering interface. Our Biomedical Engineering discipline is rated A+ in national evaluations. Committed to overcoming bottlenecks in high-end medical devices and equipment, Beihang has established more than ten national and provincial/ministerial platforms.
In 2024, the Medical Engineering & Engineering Medicine Innovation Center at Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University was officially inaugurated, drawing on Beijing’s biomedical engineering strengths. The Center provides over 4,000 m² of laboratory space across four major platforms: Intelligent Biosynthesis & Advanced Manufacturing; Intelligent Biochemical Sensing & Detection; Intelligent Tissue-Injury Assessment & Testing; and Medical Device Development & Evaluation. The Center boasts a strong faculty team led by national-level distinguished talents, including Chief Scientist Prof. Yubo Fan and Center Director Prof. Lizhen Wang. Seventy percent of core members are in their prime innovation years (ages 30–40), and over 85% hold the rank of associate professor or above.
The Medical Engineering & Engineering Medicine Innovation Center targets five core technical domains: biosynthesis, biomanufacturing, biosensing, bioinformatics, and bio-intelligence, while shaping four focused research thrusts: Frontiers of Biological Foundations, Intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Rehabilitation, Intelligent Injury Protection, and Intelligent Life Support. Anchored in the national “Healthy China” plan, the Center’s mission is to achieve breakthroughs in key enabling technologies for life and health, empowering our faculty and students to pursue depth and excellence.
Building on this foundation, and guided by Beihang’s unique “MIBT” framework in the biomedical engineering department, the Center has refined four signature directions:
1. Frontiers of Biological Foundations—to elucidate the fundamental laws underlying life phenomena;
2. Intelligent TCM Rehabilitation—to fuse modern technologies with traditional medicine and pioneer new rehabilitation pathways;
3. Intelligent Injury Protection—to safeguard the human body in extreme or special environments;
4. Intelligent Life Support—to develop advanced systems and equipment that maintain and enhance human health.
This end-to-end innovation pipeline provides fertile ground for sustained, rigorous inquiry and a springboard to new era. We are committed to translating frontier discoveries into tangible solutions that protect human health, contributing Beihang’s insight and plans to China’s biomedical engineering based enterprise.
