
The Smart Aviation Centre (SAC), jointly established by Beihang University and the French National Civil Aviation University (ENAC), serves as an innovation hub dedicated to high-level talent cultivation, cutting-edge scientific research, and global collaboration in the civil aviation field. Guided by the principle of "Safety as the baseline and Smartness as the focus," SAC focuses on advancing research and applications in low-altitude economy, smart civil aviation, and aviation safety.
In education, SAC supports the full academic system of the Sino-French Aeronautical Institute (ZFAI), offering undergraduate to doctoral programs with distinct civil aviation features. Through the Dassault 3DE-based Excellence Education Centre, over 20 specialized courses have been launched, emphasizing integrated digital engineering and intelligent system applications across smart operations, air traffic management, airport digital twins, and airworthiness certification.
In scientific research, SAC has established a comprehensive network of advanced laboratories, including the Aircraft Fleet Resilience & MRO Lab, Aviation Big Data Lab, Reliability Digital Twin Lab, Smart Air Route Planning Lab, and Virtual-Physical Integrated PHM System Lab. These facilities support interdisciplinary studies in digital twin modeling, intelligent maintenance, safety simulation, and smart airport operations, driving innovation across the aviation lifecycle.
In international collaboration, SAC maintains strong partnerships with Dassault Systèmes, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It has co-founded the Sino-Italian Joint Laboratory for Health Management and Intelligent Maintenance with Politecnico di Milano, promoting cross-border research and talent exchange.
Moreover, SAC organizes global events such as the International Summer School on Digital Twins and Aviation Safety and the Smart Civil Aviation Symposium, fostering an open, innovative, and globally connected research ecosystem.
With its multidisciplinary faculty, advanced digital infrastructure, and commitment to international cooperation, SAC is shaping the future of intelligent civil aviation and building a global innovation hub that bridges education, research, and industry integration.
Electronic Information
The Electronic Information program focuses on the digital transformation of smart civil aviation, emphasizing aeronautical communications, avionics, navigation and surveillance, artificial intelligence, and data fusion. It cultivates interdisciplinary talents capable of designing civil aviation electronic systems, developing digital twins, and conducting intelligent data analysis.Supported by SAC’s Aviation Big Data Laboratory, Avionics Simulation Laboratory, and Virtual-Physical Integrated PHM Laboratory, students gain full-stack knowledge from sensor signal processing to intelligent maintenance decision-making. Key research topics include intelligent flight data recognition, onboard system fault diagnosis, air-ground communication security, and AI verification for safety-critical aviation systems. The program adopts a project-based and globally oriented approach, offering joint AI+3DE courses with ENAC and Dassault Systèmes, establishing an integrated training system that unites algorithms, systems, and safety.
Mechanics
The Mechanical Engineering program focuses on aerospace structures, electromechanical systems, and intelligent manufacturing. Leveraging SAC’s Fleet Resilience & MRO Laboratory, Reliability Digital Twin Laboratory, and Flight Dynamics and Risk Analysis Laboratory, it trains engineers proficient in modeling, simulation, and optimization of aircraft systems.Research covers structural health monitoring, resilience assessment, intelligent maintenance plans, and operational optimization for both manned and unmanned aircraft. Students gain hands-on experience with digital twin technologies and virtual-physical integration tools, equipping them to drive innovation in smart aircraft design and low-altitude economic applications.
Energy and Power
The Energy and Power Engineering program targets aero-engines, distributed power systems, and green propulsion technologies. With access to SAC’s Cross-Medium Intelligent Testing Platform and Smart Airport Operation Simulation Lab, students gain expertise in modeling, simulation, and optimization of advanced energy systems. Research areas include engine health management, energy system digital twins, hybrid power scheduling, and carbon footprint analysis. Through AI-driven simulation and intelligent optimization, students are equipped to advance sustainable aviation power systems, supporting the global transition toward low-carbon and intelligent civil aviation.
Communications and Transportation
The Transportation Engineering program focuses on smart air route planning, air traffic control, and airport operation management. Integrating digital twin and intelligent scheduling concepts, it utilizes SAC’s Interactive Route Planning Lab, Airport Digital Twin Lab, and Air-Ground Integrated Traffic Simulation Platform. Students acquire expertise in flight optimization, traffic simulation, and resource scheduling. Research themes include airline network optimization, airspace resource management, passenger flow prediction, and collaborative airport operations. Through international collaboration with ICAO and IATA, students develop a global perspective and practical skills to lead the evolution of intelligent, integrated civil aviation systems.
