Introduction of School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation

The School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation (SMEA) traces its origins back to 1952, when Beihang University was founded. To meet the urgent national demand for aircraft manufacturing, the university established two teaching and research sections: Aircraft Technology and Engine Technology. In 1978, the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering were established. On April 28, 1998, these two departments merged to form the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation.

The School was among the first in China authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. In 1988, Mechanics was designated as one of the first National Key Disciplines, and in 2007, Mechanical Engineering was recognized as a National First-Level Key Discipline. In the most recent five rounds of national discipline evaluations, the School has consistently ranked among the top 10 nationwide.

Upholding its mission, "Serving the Nation through Aerospace," and embodying the philosophy of "Exploring the Unknown and Pursuing Innovation," SMEA has emerged as a leader in diverse domains such as space mechanisms and robotics, aerospace manufacturing, and industrial software development. The school has garnered multiple prestigious national science and technology awards, reflecting its commitment to excellence, and hosts a range of laboratories recognized at national, provincial, and ministerial levels. SMEA provides a well-rounded educational experience through its robust system of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, designed to cultivate highly competitive engineering professionals who are prepared to thrive in a global landscape. With a vibrant community exceeding 2,000 full-time students, including over 100 international scholars, the School serves as a solid launching pad for the engineers and innovators of the future, fostering a spirit of inquiry and a passion for groundbreaking advancements.
