Introduction of School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages of Beihang University ("School of Foreign Languages") started from the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Basic Courses of Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, established in 1952. The Department of Foreign Languages was set up in 1985 grown out of which the School of Foreign Languages was founded in 2007. It started to enroll undergraduates in 1978 and graduate students in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in 1988 respectively. In 2000, the master's degree in English Language and Literature was granted, and in 2005, the master's degree in Foreign Languages and Literature was granted. In July 2010, the school was awarded“First level Doctoral Program in Foreign Language and Literature”. The school has also set up a postdoctoral research station.

The School of Foreign Languages consists of the Department of English Literature, the Department of Linguistic Science and Engineering, the Department of Rhetoric and Communication, the Department of German, the Department of Russian studies, the Department of Translation and Interpretation, Division for Teaching English as a Second Language (non-English major undergraduates), the Division for Teaching English as a Second Language (non-English major postgraduates), the Center for Linguistics Research, the Center for English and American Literature Research, the Center for Translation Research, the Center for Foreign Language Studies of Russian, German, French and Japanese and the Center for Curriculum Research. The "Language Information and Intelligent Computing Laboratory" is the key laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The school currently recruits 115 faculty members, consisting of 103 full-time teachers, among whom, 16 with senior titles, 50 with associate titles and 52 with doctoral degrees. The school also has a strong faculty of 14 Doctoral supervisors and 50 MA supervisors, and 1 with the title of“Prestigious teachers of Beijing”.

The English Literature Department is distinguished by its quality BA, MA, and PhD programs of literature in English, brought in line with international norms. All its teaching staff are meanwhile active researchers, working at the cutting edge of their various fields such as British Literature, Biblical Literature, American Poetry, Women’s literature, African-American literature, Jewish literature, Comparative Literature, and Critical Theory. The students engage in a vigorous and comprehensive study of literature and culture, cultivate an understanding of individual authors, literary movements, and genres in a comparative, critical context. Its PhD program encourages original studies in fields of literary and cultural studies.

Established in 2011, the Department of Linguistic Science and Engineering offers a comprehensive talent development system integrating undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The department is supported by a strong team of faculty members, including 8 professors (7 of whom are doctoral supervisors), 8 associate professors, and 1 lecturer. Their research spans a wide range of fields, such as syntax, semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, systemic functional linguistics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, large language models for linguistic analysis, English for Specific Purposes, second language writing, and second language acquisition.

The linguistics program focuses on cutting-edge scientific issues and adopts an interdisciplinary approach. A notable feature is its pioneering research that leverages large-scale corpus data, highlighting its distinctive cross-disciplinary character.

The Department of Russian Studies was established in October, 2007, formerly known as Russian Teaching and Research Division of Foreign Languages Department. Since its establishment, Department of Russian Studies has been making great efforts in doing academic research and constructing its discipline, as a result, both teaching and academic research have witnessed smooth and rapid development. The MA program of Russian Language and Literature started to enroll MA students of Russian from 2006. Academic leaders and core of the teaching faculty have rich teaching experiences, and because of their rigorous scholarship, they have made an abundance of academic achievements.

Department of German Studies has a premiere team of teaching staff, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, and 3 assistant professors. The German program sees as its priority to give students intensive basic training. It offers a wide calibre education and requires the students to have a fairly solid grounding in the basic theories and basic knowledge of German linguistics, literature, politics, etc. The curricula consist of the various specialized skill-training courses of German, and supported by training courses in skills of English. Meanwhile, with a rich engineering background of Beihang University, some science and engineering courses are offered as part of the curricula, so as to enable the students to acquire knowledge of sciences and modern engineering unavailable in other colleges and universities of liberal arts.
