Introduction of School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages of Beihang University ("School of Foreign Languages") started from the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Basic Courses of Beijing Institute of Aeronautics, established in 1952. The Department of Foreign Languages was set up in 1985 grown out of which the School of Foreign Languages was founded in 2007. It started to enroll undergraduates in 1978 and graduate students in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in 1988 respectively. In 2000, the master's degree in English Language and Literature was granted, and in 2005, the master's degree in Foreign Languages and Literature was granted. In July 2010, the school was awarded“First level Doctoral Program in Foreign Language and Literature”. The school has also set up a postdoctoral research station.

The School of Foreign Languages consists of the Department of English Literature, the Department of Linguistic Science and Engineering, the Department of Rhetoric and Communication, the Department of German, the Department of Russian studies, the Department of Translation and Interpretation, Division for Teaching English as a Second Language (non-English major undergraduates), the Division for Teaching English as a Second Language (non-English major postgraduates), the Center for Linguistics Research, the Center for English and American Literature Research, the Center for Translation Research, the Center for Foreign Language Studies of Russian, German, French and Japanese and the Center for Curriculum Research. The "Language Information and Intelligent Computing Laboratory" is the key laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The school currently recruits 115 faculty members, consisting of 103 full-time teachers, among whom, 16 with senior titles, 50 with associate titles and 52 with doctoral degrees. The school also has a strong faculty of 14 Doctoral supervisors and 50 MA supervisors, and 1 with the title of“Prestigious teachers of Beijing”.
